History Timeline
The Chorister School has existed in Durham for around 600 years. The School was founded for the boys who sang in the Cathedral Choir, and there were no other pupils. The School came into being some time between 1390 and 1416 after the monks of Durham Cathedral asked for a special instructor in music (cantor) to be appointed. The School has grown over the years:
| Until 1541 | 5 to 8 pupils |
| 1541 – 1856 | 10 pupils |
| 1856 – 1914 | Numbers edge up to 24 |
| 1915 | 24 pupils |
| Age range of Choristers | 8 to 20 years |
Today, The Chorister School is a prep school, accepting boys and girls, day pupils and boarders (full Choristers have to board). The expansion was initiated in 1948:
| 1948 – 1955 | Rapid expansion |
| 1955 | 100 pupils reached |
| 1992 | Pre-Prep section added |
| 1993 | First girls admitted |
| 2003 | 202 pupils (60 in Pre-Prep) |
| Age range of Choristers | 3 to 13 years |
