Encouraging All To Achieve

English

English

The department’s aims are to: foster an appreciation and enjoyment of literature in the study of books, plays and poetry; enable children to be confident and articulate in the use of the spoken word; encourage creativity in story writing, poetry, scripts and other independent writing; develop an understanding of the written word as well as the ability to respond accurately and appropriately both verbally and in writing.

In the 4th Form (Key Stage 2), the emphasis is on achieving confidence in both spoken and written English. Pupils undertake a systematic study of comprehension skills and grammatical structures, together with regular reinforcement of spelling patterns.  These areas are set alongside story writing, poetry composition and opportunities to experience a wide variety of reading materials.

In the 5th and 6th Forms (Key Stage 3), the course divides naturally into Language and Literature components.  Narrative, poetry, non-fiction and drama modules give pupils the chance to write in different styles and for different audiences.  Shakespearean texts are introduced at this stage and pupils will have the opportunity to study at least one play in depth before they leave the school.
