Encouraging All To Achieve

Music

As the only cathedral choir school in North East England, Music, understandably, enjoys an important place at The Chorister School.

The Music Department

The Music Room is well-equipped with resources for music technology and the adjoining Assembly Hall provides space for choir rehearsals, Chorister practice, orchestra, band, ensemble & musical rehearsals, class percussion, formal & informal recitals, music competitions and ballet classes. The Music Block consists of several smaller teaching/practice rooms.

Every pupil has regular class music lessons each week, with a music specialist in the Pre-prep and the Director of Music in the main school.

Music theory, basic keyboard techniques and ICT skills are taught throughout the course with additional lessons provided for pupils needing the more advanced ABRSM theory syllabus.

The majority of pupils play at least one musical instrument and individual tuition is taught by a team of visiting, self-employed specialist teachers with the Director of Music acting as a link. All pupils are given the opportunity to take external practical and theory examinations and examination successes are achieved each term, many with Merit, Distinction or Honours.  Pupils who show a particular musical talent are encouraged to apply for music awards to senior schools and The Chorister School is proud of its successes.

Extra curricular music

The Junior Choir is open to all Year 2 and Year 3 pupils and the School Choir to all Year 4 to Year 8 pupils, including probationer Choristers.

The Galilee Choir enables non-chorister boys and girls to sing regular Cathedral services.  All three choirs join forces to give an annual Christmas concert in aid of The Children’s Society. Other charities supported have included the NSPCC, The Mayor’s Appeal, The Leonard Cheshire Homes and the local hospice.

Major choral concerts in the Cathedral and school musicals involve the Choristers, Galilee Choir, School Choir, staff, former pupils, parents and friends.

The department’s philosophy is to make Music accessible to all pupils by stimulating emotional and intellectual responses and,
most importantly, enjoyment.
