Sport
The Chorister School aims to provide a wide knowledge of many areas of sport encouraging a healthy competitive attitude towards sport and giving our pupils many life skills.
Sport is open to all. We have an inclusive approach to games teaching where all are encouraged to join in and enjoy. Boys and girls are given excellent coaching in team games. We run teams in Rugby, Soccer, Hockey, Athletics, Netball, Cricket and Rounders. We have a purpose built sports hall for PE lessons and After Shool coaching sessions in the winter when it is dark, and for cricket net practice in the summer. All of Pre-prep use the sports hall for their PE lessons. All children, up to year 8, go swimming. We run "Interhouse" competitions regularly where children compete within school for fiercely contested honours. We teach the children to be magnanimous in victory and to accept defeat graciously. There are several sports related After School Clubs including Karate, Swimming and Football for the Prep school and Karate and Multisports for the Pre-prep. Sport is very important to us here at Choristers.
P.E.
The Chorister School offers an excellent all round academic education and within the P.E department we endeavour to offer the same level of opportunities and the same breadth and quality whilst creating an enthusiastic and fun environment. Every year group covers six different topics throughout the year over a five week period. The topics covered are listed below:
- Ball game skills, forms one to three
- Basketball, forms four to six
- Gymnastics, forms one to six
- Health related exercise, forms one to six
- Dance, forms one to six
- Badminton, forms one to six
- Short tennis, forms one to six
Every year builds on the progress that has been made in previous years looking to encourage a broad knowledge and understanding of physical education whist breeding a healthy competitive nature. On top of the one hour a week of P.E the Chorister School also gives a swimming lesson every week to each age group. Concentrating on the four major strokes (front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). Every child is timed over differing distances dependant on their ability, and their progression is recorded throughout their school career. From the times recorded children are selected to compete in inter-house swimming gala’s and competitive gala’s against over schools.
Girls Games
In the Prep School all girls have two afternoons every week doing games. Forms 1 and 2 have games together every Tuesday and Friday, whilst Forms 3 – 6 have games every Monday and Thursday. These girls are taught in two groups, each with a member of staff and the assistance of a gap year student and are the basis of the U11, U12 and U13 team squads for matches throughout the year.
The Junior girls are introduced to high five netball, mini hockey and an adapted form of rounders. This leads to a small number of netball and rounders matches being played towards the end of the Lent and Summer term against other schools. Hockey matches are not played until the girls move into Form 3.
The Senior girls continue to play netball, hockey and rounders but are progressively involved in more and more friendly matches and Prep School tournaments. Netball is also played in Durham City Leagues at U12 and U13 age groups and hockey at Durham County tournaments at U11, U12 and U13 age groups. Girls also have the opportunity to progress to U13 and U14 county trials, and can be nominated to attend regional netball and hockey assessment centres.
Every girl in Forms 3-6 represents her house in netball, hockey and rounders championships that are held at the end of each respective term. Full and half School Colours are awarded by the games staff at the end of the Lent and Summer terms for hockey, netball, swimming, rounders and athletics. These are usually given to any outstanding 6th form girls who have shown commitment, endeavour, reliability and excellence, and who are considered to have been impeccable ambassadors for the Chorister School.
