The Chorister School has existed in
Durham for around 600 years. The School was founded for the
boys who sang in the Cathedral Choir, and there were no other
pupils. The School came into being some time between 1390 and
1416 after the monks of Durham Cathedral asked for a special
instructor in music (cantor) to be appointed. The School has
grown over the years:
