1) Durham Cathedral Young Singers General Information

Do you like singing?           Are you aged 8 - 13?

Would you like to be part of a new and unique singing venture

Durham Cathedral Young Singers (DCYS) is a new Cathedral choir which has been established for young singers from across the region. You do not have to audition to become a member.

Tuition and choral rehearsals; take place on Saturday mornings in The Chorister School, which is in The College behind the Cathedral, from 10.00am - 12.00 pm.

There is a charge of £30 per term per child.

If there is any difficulty with this for any parent or gaurdian then please contact the Outreach Office 0191 3840433 in confidence. We do not wish anyone to miss out if they are keen singers.

During the morning you will sing in either a boys or girls choir and also as a full choir. We are hoping, after half term, to begin a Chamber Choir for keen enthusiastic singers and a Changing Voices Choir.

Question: ‘How do I become part of this choir?'

Answer: Either:

  • Complete and return the application form available below
  • Or, Contact Mish Kelly, the Outreach Co-ordinator at the address below.

Then come with your parent/carer to The Chorister School the following Saturday morning at 10.00am and join the choir and the fun.

BIKE RIDE TO RAISE MONEY FOR DCYS

Early in September there is the Durham Bike Ride, on Sunday the 4th. I would like to get together a team of us to join in, and raise money for Outreach/DCYS. Those of you who are keen cyclists- and I know there are a good few- can you chat to your parents.  See if they might like to join in as well  (Everyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent) and we could all make a day of it. You could bring a picnic if you were interested in the 25 mile one, or a snack if you prefer doing the 10 mile cycle.  We are not likely to go at too wild a speed, but there will be enough adults to cycle in small groups and we could meet up for snack/picnic at a designated spot.

Last year there were just two of us who raised money for DCYS, we did the 10 mile one in just over an hour.  Lets have a big gang of us this year.  You will need to check your bike is in good order. You will want to train for it over the summer- I will certainly have to- and then let me know who might be interested in joining.

All details can be found at www.durhambigride.co.uk , please get your parents to look at the website so you can see the route, and the criteria for joining. The cost is small, for a good day out.

     EVENSONG-  14TH NOV

You will notice that we will be doing Evensong on the 14th of November. This year's evensong is special- we would like to invite parents to sing with us- the dads singing their own line of music, the mums singing theirs. Mums and Dads you will not be alone- the St Chad Chapel Choir- who are spectacular- will sing with you. There will be 3  rehearsals for the adults alone, without the children- one for the Mums, one for the Dads, one together, and then a further one with St Chads and DCYS, before the evensong itself.  You will notice on the day of the Evensong our final rehearsal is at 4.00 (Sorry I realise that eats into the working day)

I am hoping to make this a big joyous festive service, where parents who might feel a little rusty singing, or who have never sung in a church service before, or who are just frightened witless of singing will feel that they do have a voice, and it is fun to use it. I will  provide a CD of the music, with your own line clearly sung so you can listen to it again after your rehearsal.  Singing in a service is not as scary as it sounds; as well as the music there will be a service sheet clearly indicating what happens when. You will have strong singers all around you. If completely confused (which will be unlikely) you follow the directions of whoever is conducting. It would be lovely to have a large number of adults with us- the atmosphere of Evensong is special, and I think you would enjoy yourselves. Are you game?

Adult rehearsals will be evening affairs, dates yet to be confirmed.  I do promise to make them fun and informal while we learn the notes. I forbid anyone from worrying about making mistakes- wrong notes and mistakes are to be encouraged. Could you please indicate whether you will be able join us- email is fine there will also be a sheet going around at the end of summer Term, and beginning of Autumn Term, so that I have a clear idea of numbers.

Go on- take the plunge. Your children will be proud of you.
