Meet the Students

Purple Class Pupil

Victoria is in the Pre Prep. She can arrive early and have her breakfast with the boarders and Choristers. She met her Teacher when she came from her nursery for "story time" a few months before she started, and then came back for a whole day a week or so later. At school she is beginning to learn to write, to add things together and to sing French songs.

During her three years in the Pre Prep she will move from Purple class to Silver and Then on to Gold class before entering the Prep School when she is seven. She will be particularly close to 'her' teacher in each class; but all the teachers in the Pre Prep are involved with her learning and they all know her well enough to take care of her.

Form 1 pupil

Thomas is in Year 3 or the First Form as we call it. He has recently joined the Prep school with some other new boys and girls. The rest of the children in his class have come up from our Pre Prep. Everybody is friendly and he quickly settles down: before long you wouldn't know that he hadn't been here since he was four. He is learning some Rugby skills and thinks it's a game that he is going to be good at. He also enjoys his dinners!

During the next two years he will get used to moving out of his classroom for Art, Music, and Technology. His confidence and his ability to organise himself will develop. In the meantime, while he is in the First Form, all of Thomas's curricular time except music and games is with his class teacher, and this provides him with the continuity and the security that, as a seven-year old, he needs.

Chorister Pupil

Henry is one of our choristers. He is in Form 3. His home is in The Isle of Man so he is pretty familiar with Manchester airport!

Henry has a busy life. He enjoys evensong in the Cathedral on five days each week, and on Sunday he sings two morning services as well. He loves the singing and the music (and sometimes sings a solo in the Cathedral).

He plays piano and violin as well as singing every day.

He enjoys football in the evenings and he has plenty of friends. At Christmas there are parties and the pantomime and Christmas stockings. The Choristers look forward to Christmas and Easter as their own special times when they have the school to themselves and sing for huge congregations at the major services in their Cathedral.

4th Form Pupil

Lucie is in Year 6 - the Fourth Form. Her homework time has increased and she moves from room to room for her lessons because she has more subject specialist teachers. She feels ready for this extra responsibility now that she is ten.

Lucie started in the Pre Prep when she was four and has played in all the girls' matches so far. She is learning the skills of hockey, rounders, netball and tennis with the other girls; and enjoys competing with boys on the athletics track.

Lucie goes to Art Club when lessons are over.

6S Pupil

Kate is in 6S, the scholarship form. She is Head of the school, and a school monitor which gives her some valuable responsibility for other children in the school.

She played in the School Netball and Hockey teams, carried the Durham Gospels in the service for the enthronement for the new Bishop of Durham, and now she is looking forward to going to Durham school where she hopes to take one of the top academic scholarships of the year. She will find that she has already made a good start on some of the GCSE work that she will be doing at her next school and she can look back with pride on her career at The Chorister School.
